I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how the internet continues to evolve, and how people are evolving with it — or because of it. The internet has become a mainstay in my household, and my kids use it daily for research, communication, and entertainment. I asked my oldest son a few questions about some of the basic research tools I grew up with. Some of his answers I expected, and some were a little surprising. For instance, he could not name a publisher of an encyclopedia. I grew up with World Book and Encyclopedia Brittanica, and Webster was a common name to me. Not so much nowadays — he had only a vague idea about Webster but had not heard of the others. What were his instant answers? Google for research, Facebook for communication, YouTube and Miniclip for entertainment. No surprises here. So what does that say? Simply that times have changed. The tools available to us have changed, and how we use those tools is changing us.

The Polarization of Twitter
Topics: Social Media

So I sat there with this sick, sinking feeling in my stomach. I’m not sure exactly when or where this happened, but I remember the feeling well. I had a few minutes to break away from everything and think, and it was then that it dawned on me that I had become a total jerk.

Over the previous months, I had become so sick of all of the negatives of Twitter. The Twitter that I loved so dearly had been hijacked by selfish twitter whores, who had effectively taken the buzz word “conversation” and drilled it into a lowly grave. I was tired of looking on my feed and seeing 1–2 people dominating the front page with their incessant tweeting. And I had gotten so sick of my feed being dominated by Twitterers talking about Twitter and other social media. (No seriously, isn’t there anything else you can talk about? I mean besides promoting yourself shamelessly?) Twitter was losing its appeal fast.

Announcing ‘Add an R’ day

That’s right. We’re announcing Add an R day. Sound dumb? You got it! But hey, I bet you were a hater with the International Talk Like a Pirate day too, huh? (or eh? for those with a Canadian bent) Well, that has gone HUGE. Check out their website.

Here’s how ‘Add an R’ day works. For the entire day, you ‘Add an R’ to words you say.

+ R yourself

Sleepy + R = Sleerpy

Tennis + R = Tierness

Desk + R = Deersk

It’s especially fun with co-worker names. It’s hilarious how they will look at you like you’ve totally lost it for the final time, but you’ll have them doing it in an hour. It’s conteergious!

So, give it a try. Don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s all fun on February 13th, the official “Add ‘n R” day.
