The Great Phil Yanov Experiment
August 22nd, 2008 by Chris RackleyIt hadn’t been 24 hours since I poured out my schizophrenic thoughts on Digg that Phil Yanov stopped me at Tech After 5 and proceeded to put me in my place.
“Digg is a ghetto,” he said. I stared at him blankly. He could have just said, “Yo mama’s so obese” and I would’ve had the same reaction. Coming to my senses, I asked Phil, “but what should I do? Digg’s flawed, sure. But it’s the best thing going for news sharing right now.” Okay, so that was a bad thing to say.
A bad, bad thing.
Here, I’m talking to a guy who’s all things techie, and he doesn’t like Digg, and my reply was, “Yeah, well top it!”???!?!
“Yahoo Buzz, kid,” was his reply. To paraphrase Phil further, “It’s effect on your news is quantifiably more than what Digg has to offer.”
Hmmmm . . . you’re on Phil. Last night I decided to start adding Yahoo Buzz buttons to our blog posts. At first, I was just going to add it along with our Digg buttons. But no, no, no - this can get so much better. Let’s do a Phil Yanov Experiment. We’re going to tear down the Digg buttons (for now) and hoist up Buzz buttons on all of our blog posts for the next couple of weeks. We’ll be following everything closely.
If Phil turns out to be right, then hey - it’s a win-win! We get more exposure. If Phil’s wrong, and Buzz does nothing for our posts . . . well, then there will probably be a hole ripped through the universe and the space-time continuum will be shattered beyond repair - because Phil’s never wrong. So we’ll see - it’s on, Phil.
Now, that I’ve got that out of my system, I must mention that Mr. Yanov also turned me on to TechMeMe the other day. A news sharing site specifically for techno-babble - it’s really love at first sight. I think I learned more in the fifteen minutes I spent going through news on their front page yesterday that I’d learned all of the last couple of weeks. I highly, highly recommend everyone check that site out.
