I added the Facebook Personality Test and took the 20 question quiz. I wasn’t surprised by the little graph that showed my score in 5 areas. Okay, scoring the exact same percentage in 4 of the 5 categories was a little surprising, but not the biggest thing.
What WAS surprising were the suggestions for my projected career – secondary education, sociology, and interior design. Hello! Where did those come from? In fact, out of 61 career suggestions, the 59th was Information Technology.
The cat is out of the bag. No more smoke and mirrors. When my managers see this stat they will start scrambling to find a replacement for me! I really don’t belong in the technology world.
How did I get here in the first place? I guess it’s because I like to know what’s going on and I like to help people “connect the dots.” In business today that happens with information, and information is controlled by technology. But, when I really sit back and think about it this is what motivates me:
- the discipline of thought required to be a good developer. I like words because they are interchangeable. Developers see words as a box that precisely defines their next move. How fascinating to be able to put yourself under that kind of discipline. I need more of this discipline in my life.
- getting to work with air and space. The fact that people learned how to capture the unseeable and force it into a medium that everyone can see is unbelievable. I want to be near people who create for the future!
- helping customers get to the next level. Business is exciting and rewarding. Nothing is more rewarding than looking at statistics of a new website component and realizing that our company’s efforts helped another company grow. I thrive on that kind of excitement.
- the ability to learn something new everyday. Knowledge is right there, only a keystroke away. All it takes is effort on my part and I can share in what others are creating. I am passionate about growing in this way.
So, while I might not really belong in Information Technology, I’ve made it my career because of the things I’m passionate about: discipline, creativity, excitement, and learning. In the end, perhaps it’s not about tying yourself to a specific field that yields the rewards. Instead, find a career that matches your passions, it makes life worthwhile!
