We could argue all day about what exactly communication is. The theories, ideas, and technicalities are virtually endless.

Something most can agree on, however, is the fact that communication is an integral part of human existence and poor communication or miscommunication can have enormous negative effects. Yet still there is a disconnect for many people between the importance of clear communication and the necessity for communication professionals in every field.

I was privileged to interview Rhiannon Poore, the director of marketing and communication at Find Great People International, to get an inside perspective on her role as a communications professional in the marketing realm. She was very gracious and provided great insight to me personally that I hope, in turn, will enlighten readers.

Every so often, someone comes floating around the office to refill your coffee, to shine your shoes, to file your paper work, to answer your phone, and to do so without speaking a word.

It’s the intern.

Typically the intern is left with the tasks that no one wants to complete. And it usually works out well for everyone. Everyone, that is, except for the intern.

First off, can we clear the air and admit that Facebook isn’t for every business?

Use tools for their intended purpose

A business development officer asked me this week how he could use Facebook for his business. After asking him some questions to help him analyze his situation and opportunity, I surmised that many people are using Facebook in ways it wasn’t intended to be used.

Facebook wasn’t intended to generate business leads. It’s a community tool.

Who’s your audience?

Every time you open your mouth to talk, they’re right there. Whenever you accept a call, they’re on the other end. When you hit Send, they’re about to get an inbox alert.

Your audience—easily forgotten, often neglected—shows up every time you communicate, no matter if you’re on the Web or off.

Sure, not everyone’s listening, and not everyone who reads is a client. In fact, it’s precisely because our audience tends to be vague and faceless that we often find the whole concept of a blog or website to be intimidating.

That’s the status quo. What if your audience was a little more, well, status oh-yeah-that’s-who-you-are?

Dancing with the Stars (Of Communication)

Communication is an art. There is no exact equation or incantation that, when spoken, creates valuable communication between individuals. The entire process can be a masterful dance of words and nonverbal gestures, or an awkward stare reminiscent of a junior high crush. Unfortunately, the latter is more often true of communication occurring within organizations. However, the oft-quoted saying, “You cannot not communicate” remains true. Similar to a well-performed ballet, communication requires much thought and practice to be executed well.
