Why is Facebook so popular?

Facebook. Can’t live with it. Can’t live without it.

With more than 300 million active users and approximately 8 billion minutes a day worldwide spent on the site, I’d have to say it’s pretty popular (click here for more astounding stats).

Two reasons Facebook is so popular:

1. ME, MYSELF, and I Christopher Nicholas

2. Curious Georgecurious-george

Let’s explore those shall we?

1. Me, myself, and I — in other words the site is all about YOU (or me rather).  People LOVE to talk about themselves and Facebook capitalizes on that to the extreme. Think it through. You set up a profile featuring…YOU.  Look at YOUR options — edit MY profile, view videos of ME, view photos of ME, what’s on YOUR mind, and write something about YOURSELF to name a few features. It’s perfect! Even keeps track of the number of friends you currently have to compare with others in the epic quest to have the most Facebook friends.

2. Curious George — admit it. You’re a Facebook stalker. Half of your Facebook friends you would never call to chat with, but you don’t mind surfing through their pictures or watching their videos or reading their wall posts. Don’t get me wrong, they put it out there for you to read so all’s fair in love and war. However, you know the whole reason you read half the mundane things people post is because, well, you’re curious (maybe even nosy at times). =)

Before you call me a Facebook hater or tell me that the only reason you’re on Facebook is to “connect with long lost friends” I exhort you to think it through. You know you love looking at your ex’s photos without them knowing. You know you get a twinkle in your eye and grin on your face when your friend count goes from 999 to 1000.

Facebook hit the nail on the head when designing a site that allows YOU to have an “all you can eat buffet” of ego building and curiosity satisfying. I think they should have named it iFacebook or CuriousFace.

So is this all a bad thing? NO. It’s brilliant. Facebook built a model on two timeless principles (love of self and the curiosity of people) — how can you capitalize on these two principles to promote your business? How can you promote your customer and give them the information they’re craving?

In the mean time.…I’m going to go look through some of my boss’s photos and check my friend count again.

Hi Chris, I’ve been doing a research on why is Facebook so popular and I can tell you your article is one of the best I found online. Interesting thing is that no other articles describes it in such a narrow way you do, even though it’s so obvious :) .

Thank you for a great, clear concise explanation!

  • Facebook’s been around for a while, but it seems that its popularity has skyrocketed in the past year. Why do you suppose that is?

  • Brendan Carranza says:

Facebook was technically never created to have a ton of friends, that’s why Facebook has a friend limit; it’s not Myspace or else it would fail like Myspace. Maybe you should do actual research before posting stuff like this.
