It’s definitely easier to find quality material of a negative nature than of the positive side. So, here it is. I’m pulling from a subhub.com article to bring you the worst Web site design mistakes of 2008, though these are mostly timeless in nature. I list the “best” ones here:

  1. Copy Difficult to Read (Winner: Gamequarian)
  2. Not Enough White Space (Winner: Restaurant Guide Atlanta)
  3. Meaningless Home Page Flash Animation (Winner: Int’l Home Fashions)
  4. Reinventing Navigation (Winner: Capstone Publishing)
  5. Horizontal Scrolling (Winner: The Horizontal Way)
  6. Don’t Use Music (Winner: here)
Find the rest of the worst mistakes as well as their remedies here. If you don’t learn from history, you’re doomed to repeat it!

    Brandon,

    This is a good list! It’s amazing that most of these are probably issues that just about anyone would agree with, yet they still persist online.

    I think much of this has to do with a lack of strategic planning at the beginning of a web project. This is the point at which all of the goals of the project can be evaluated and the scope can be defined based upon reasonable factors beyond just, “hey wouldn’t it be cool if…”

    I wrote a newsletter article on this back in August called How Much (work) is a Website? A lot! (http://www.newfangled.com/planning_for_a_web_development_project) which talks about the advantaged of pre-project strategic planning.

    As for Manducatis: Wow! 30 images, no links, looks like a watercolor painting done on toilet paper…what?!?
