A ‘Plug’ for Full Orbed Customer Service

November 5th, 2008 by Brandon Godwin

I wasn’t paid to tell this story like some celebrities on TV. This is real life smacking you in the face on a Wednesday. The great thing about the story I am about to unfold is that it’s about you in some ways. Probably reckons that you’ve been there before.

Setting - on the way to an “anonymous Greenville, SC tire station” to help a friend get his flat fixed. Since I was following behind for precautionary measures, I was the last to arrive at the scene.

I had the priviledge of attending An Event Apart in Chicago this week. It was a tremendous time of discovering new ways to increase the Internet worth of our customers. Here are some of the best quotes from the event:

“Good design is invisible. You are not calling attention to your Photoshop skills.”

- Jeffrey Zeldman

“Sell ideas, not pixels!”

- Jeffrey Zeldman

On Sunday evening I rendezvoused with Dan Rundle and Dan Wooster in Chicago for what is probably the premier conference solely dedicated to web design: An Event Apart. Before heading up to the Windy City I set three goals for myself, one being to take at least one thing away from each session that I could use to become a better designer. Below is my report card:

  • Understanding Web Design - Jeffrey Zeldman
Lesson Learned: “Good web design is about the character of the content, not the character of the designer.”
  • Debug/Reboot - Eric Meyer
Lesson Learned: Practical ways to make CSS work for me through debugging and maintaining cross-browser uniformity.
  • Storytelling by Design - Jason Santa Maria
Lesson Learned: In one form or another, web design tells a story. The problem? Our stories are lacking. There hasn’t been any landmark web design that we could compare to great landmarks of graphic design (like Milton Glaser’s Bob Dylan poster, Harry Beck’s London Underground subway map design, etc.). Get innovative! Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s a shot of our Guestboard that we asked all of our guests at the Open House to sign. Thanks to all of you who stopped by! Sadly there was no extra bruschetta to be found afterwards.
